We will always tell you where anything is. We only ever recommend the places that are owned by somebody who lives here.
Nobody pays to be on this list and nobody can pay to be recommended more often.

A free community project from Korvall
Korvall is a Lancaster company. We build phone systems, texting and inventory software for small businesses, and we built this with the same tools.
It costs about a hundred dollars a month to run: the number, the texts and the writing. We publish what it costs because a free thing with a hidden bill is not really free.
The shops
We are visiting shops now, one door at a time. Every shop on this list has been visited in person, gave us their own hours, and wrote their own line about themselves. When there are enough of them to be useful, they will all be listed here with their hours and their own words.

Who is on this list
Independent, locally owned, and small enough that the owner knows the place. Specifically, all four:
- Locally owned. At least half the business is owned by people who live in Lancaster County.
- Locally decided. The owner decides what the place sells, what it charges and when it opens. Nobody at a head office anywhere else gets a vote.
- Not a franchise or a chain location. If the name is licensed from somebody else, it is not on the list, however local the owner is.
- Five locations or fewer, all of them in Lancaster County.
One more rule that is not about size: the shop has to be a real place we can send somebody to, with a street address in or near Lancaster city, and we have to have been there.
How we decide the hard ones
We write the reason down and publish it here. If you think we got one wrong, tell us and we will say why, in public, and change it if we were wrong.

How do you know these are all independent?
All four have to be true: at least half owned by people who live in Lancaster County, the owner decides what it sells and when it opens, it is not a franchise or a chain location, and five locations or fewer, all in the county. And we have to have been there.
Will it text me stuff I did not ask for?
No. It answers what you ask and stops. If you ever want a text once a month about what is happening downtown, you have to ask for it, and you can stop it any time.

Privacy
Plain version, and we mean it:
- What we collect: your phone number and the messages you send.
- What we use it for: answering you, and reading the answers we got wrong so we can fix them.
- How long we keep it: the messages and your number for 30 days, then they are deleted. We keep counts with no phone number attached, so we can say how much the line gets used.
- Who we share it with: nobody. We do not sell numbers. We never will. There is no analytics pixel on this page.
- Who handles it on the way through: Twilio carries the texts, Anthropic writes the replies, Google provides the map links.
- If you asked for the monthly notice: we keep that consent while you are subscribed, and if you opt out we keep your number on the do not send list permanently, so nobody ever adds you back by accident.
